Triumph’s Modern Classic range gets another member in the form of the handsome, butch 2019 Speed Twin 1200.
Triumph unveiled the 2019 Speed Twin 1200 at an exclusive event in Paris. The Speed Twin sits at the top of the Modern Classic range alongside the Scrambler. The British motorcycle manufacturer claims that it borrows some DNA from the Street Triple making it a rival to anything else in the class.
The Speed Twin makes 96hp and 112Nm out of an eight-valve 1200cc parallel-twin motor that also powers the Bobber and Thruxton R. Triumph updated the motor for the new bike with reduced internal mass, three riding modes, and switchable traction control. The Speed Twin now boasts of a lightened crank, high compression heads a la the Thruxton R, hidden catalytic converter and a torque assist clutch.
Suspension duties are handled by Kayaba 41mm cartridge forks up front that look similar to the setup on the Bonneville Bobber Black. out back, the Speed Twin sits on twin gas-charged Kayaba shocks, nailing the retro look. To make sure the bike rides as good as it looks, Triumph has also given it a front brake setup similar to that of the Street Triple: Twin Brembo calipers biting on 320mm discs. A Nissin two-piston caliper sits on the rear disc.
With the 2019 Speed Twin 1200, Triumph has set bikes like the Ducati Monster 1200, Scrambler 1100, and the Suzuki Katana as its target. Hinckley also wants this bike to be the ideal stepping stone for those moving up from the 900cc Street Twin or 1200cc Triumphs with a milder tune. Pricing details for the Speed Twin are not out yet. The company will disclose them on 18 January 2019. Here is the full specification for the latest classic roadster out of Hinckley.
